The Secretariat for Culture is responsible for:
• the protection of significant cultural resources and resources with landmark status • museums and archiving • libraries • art (theatre, music, films and the fine, applied and visual arts) • cultural education • amateur culture and arts • provision of suitable working conditions for cultural institutions and independent artists • cultural events • international collaboration • implementation of programs of significance to the City • investment in and maintenance of cultural facilities • supervision of cultural institutions founded by the City
It is also responsible, on behalf of the Belgrade City Assembly, for:
• erection and maintenance of monuments and memorials • naming of squares and streets • presenting the City of Belgrade Prize for arts (literature, theatre, music, fine arts and film) • implementation of specific programs in the field of culture (procurement of publications, young musical and artistic talents, producing documentary and short films)
The network of cultural institutions of importance to the City of Belgrade, whose operation, program implementation and facility maintenance are financed (in their entirety or mostly) from the City budget, comprises:

The City of Belgrade is the legal founder of the aforementioned institutions and companies, in accordance with the law.
For special programs in the area of culture, Belgrade City Assembly has appointed expert committees to the Secretariat for Culture, on a project-by-project basis:
PROCUREMENT OF PUBLICATIONS FOR LIBRARIES WHOSE FOUNDER IS THE CITY OF BELGRADE
Committee members are as follows: Jovan Radulović, writer, director of Belgrade City Library, Dr Tanja Rosić, lecturer, Nevena Milić, journalist, Dr Mirjana Detelić from the Balkanology Institute of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts, Dr Bojan Jović from the Institute for Literature, Olga Srećković-Franić, head of the Library Stock Procurement Department, Nataša Trkulja, director of the Miodrag Bulatović LIbrary, Jasmina Čubrilo, manager of the Despot Stefan Lazarević Library and Jasmina Ninkov, director of the Milutin Bojić Library.
The job of the committee is to track publishing, collect tenders from publishers and authors, examine tenders and make selection of titles and number of copies, whose purchase is negotiated by the Secretariat for Culture for the purposes of stocking libraries founded by the City of Belgrade. The Committee makes its decisions based on the value of the titles offered and the demand from libraries for certain titles. The committee also selects journals relating to art and literature, which are procured for the use of libraries.
On behalf of the committee, the Secretariat for Culture twice annually (spring and autumn procurement periods) publicly invites publishers and authors to tender their publications for procurement.
TALENTED YOUNG MUSICIANS
The committee was formed with the aim of helping young artists participate in international music competitions. Committee members are as follows: Olga Bauer, piano teacher, Svetlana Perić, piano teacher, Miomir Simonović, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music, Vladislav Bobić, violin teacher and Ivana Avžner, Deputy Secretary for Culture.
The Secretariat for Culture issues a public invitation annually. Young artists up to the age of 25 and solo singers up to the age of 28 may participate. The committee approves funding for their travel costs (purchase of return ticket). Priority is given to candidates with the best results in school and in competitions at home and abroad. Candidates are sent to young people's music competitions recognised by the European Union.
During 2006, funds were approved for more than one hundred young talents to participate in international competitions. Four of our young harp players, Radmila Jovanović, Katarina Stanković, Aleksandra Tomić and Una Sovilj won first prizes at competitions in France. Pianists Sara Vujadinović, Katarina Nešić and Sofija Nedić won competitions in the Czech Republic, France and Italy. Violinists Kristijan Petrović, Milica Žugić, Iva Miletić as well as celloist Jelena Ilić took first prizes at competitions in Macedonia, Italy, the Czech Republic and Austria.
ENCOURAGING THE PRODUCTION OF DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM
Committee members are as follows: Miroslav Momčilović, Goran Šušljik, Dušan Milić, Nikola Majdak and Željko Mijanović.
The job of the committee is to track film production (documentaries, short features, animated and experimental), collect projects via tender, examine them and make selection of those projects which will be produced with the financial assistance of the Belgrade City Assembly. |
