Transport and communications

As early as in the beginning of the 19th century, Belgrade has had a special role as the most advanced center to the central Europe, with two navigable rivers and at the crossroads of communications connecting central with southern Europe and Middle East. There are 1,913 transport companies registered in Belgrade, with 88,595 employees.

Railway transport

Belgrade Railway Junction, where seven main international railroads meet, has a considerable capacity. The commodity related activities are realized in 15 stations, having 85 manipulative and industrial tracks 52 km long. The modern marshalling yard "Makiš" with centralized and automatic management and traffic control has daily capacity of 600 railway cars.

A part of the railway junction is container terminal for international transport. There is a plan to build 120,000 sqm of business space within this passenger-railway system, and part of it has been realized in the most modern underground railway station "Vukov spomenik".

Road transport

Belgrade has over 2,500 freight vehicles with individual carrying capacity of over 5 tons, with specialized motor pool for transport of frozen goods, powdery and liquid cargo, containers and off-gauge cargo.

Two bus stations (BAS and Lasta) have 80 departure and 20 arrival platforms and with daily traffic of over 1,400 buses.

Transport, tourist, and other companies have about 1,500 buses, and public city and suburban transport companies (GSP and Lasta) have 1,090 buses. Over 70% of all forwarding operations in Serbia are made by the companies in Belgrade.

Air traffic

The Belgrade Airport "Nikola Tesla" is equipped for an annual turnover of 7,000,000 passengers and it has reached connectivity by regular lines, beside the domestic ones, with 55 destinations in the world, with participation of 22 foreign air traffic companies, along with the domestic operators.

River transport

The river economy companies have about 700 vessels of different kinds and purposes, with total carrying capacity of 510,000 tons. The river port complex on the Danube is a commodity-transport center which covers 120 ha. On that space, 290,000 sqm of covered and 650,000 sqm of open warehouses are built, as well as a container terminal covering 44,000 sqm.

Communications

Belgrade is the national center of postal traffic and telecommunication and it is linked to all telecommunication centers of the world.
