The Municipality of Grocka covers an area of 28,923 hectares, which is inhabited by a population of 75,466.

The name of the present-day township was mentioned for the first time under the Slavic name of Gardec in 878. At the time of the Ottoman administration (according to the 1528 population census), the settlement bore the name of Hisarlik. The Municipality was created in 1955 when it joined the community of Belgrade municipalities.

The Day of the Municipality is October 17, the date of liberation of Grocka in the Second World War.
