Education in Serbia is categorized as preschool (kindergarten), primary education (primary schools), secondary education (high school) and higher education (university faculties and art academies). Belgrade is a city with 2 state universities, 17 preschool institutes, 201 primary schools, 87 secondary schools, and a variety of science and research institutions from all areas.
Network of institutions dealing with children social welfare consists of 17 preschool institutions, founded for the area of each city municipality and Center of Children’s Summer Resorts and Convalescents of the City of Belgrade.
Primary school education
Children are enrolled into primary school at the age of six or seven. The same as preschool education, primary school education is compulsory. Primary school lasts for eight years, and it is divided into two stages:
● Lower grades (grades 1 to 4)
● Higher grades (grades 5 to 8).
In Belgrade there are 87 secondary schools, out of them 51 professional schools, 21 grammar schools, 9 music schools, 1 art school и 5 craft high schools.

The University of Belgrade
The highest-level education institution of Belgrade and Serbia, the University of Belgrade has 31 faculties, 11 science-research institutes, 13 centers and University library. First Serbian University was formally founded on February 27th, 1905, with three faculties: Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Technology.

The University of Arts was founded under the name of Arts Academy, on June 10th, 1957. Independent until then, the Faculty of Music (founded in 1937), the Faculty of Fine Arts (founded in 1937), the Faculty of Applied Arts (founded in 1948) and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts (founded in 1948, into which in 1950 Higher School for film acting and directing was integrated), were associated into the Art Academy, as an association of higher art schools in Belgrade.
