The Municipality of Palilula covers an area of 44,661 hectares, which is inhabited by around 180,000 people.
Its name emanated from the fact that, at the time of the Turkish rule, it was forbidden to smoke or to use tobacco in any way in the streets of the town, due to the threat of fire. Those who could not do without smoking, in order to light up a pipe, had to go outside the city walls. One of such places where they went was the present-day Palilula (meaning “light a pipe”). It has been a Belgrade municipality since 1957.
The patron day of the Municipality of Palilula is St. Mark’s Day, on May 8.
