It was founded by the People’s City Board on May 27, 1960. Up to the setting up of the Institute, there had been registered 20 cultural monuments in the territory of Belgrade and, today, there are 333 immovable cultural assets (cultural monuments, physical cultural and historical sites, archeological sites, and sights). The Institute is engaged in the protection in the territories of all the 16 City municipalities and, as required, it participates in joint professional teams with the Republic Institute and with the regional institutes in the territory of the Republic.

The experts of the Institute deal with continuous reconnaissance of the terrain, research, and valuation of immovable archtitectonic, sacral, and profane buildings/facilities, archeological sites, facilities of the traditional local architecture, cemeteries, public monuments and, physical sites. The results of their research are published in special publications of the Institute: reports, in the specialized periodical “Heritage”, and in special thematic publications. The Institute makes proposal of the decisions on registration of cultural monuments, projects for repair, reconstruction, restoration, and conservation of cultural assets, as well as of other facilities registered as physical architectural and cultural and historic treasures, as well as all kinds of surveys for physical planning. For the requirements of owners and tenants/users of immovable cultural assets and assets given a landmark status, the Institute deals with and issues decisions on undertaking of the measures of technical protection and approvals of the projects related to the preservation and revitalization of the assets.

In line with the stipulations of the Law on Cultural Assets, for 40 years of its existence, the Institute has protected a total of 333 immovable cultural assets in the territory of Belgrade:
- 9 physical cultural and historical sites
- 21 archeological sites
- 296 cultural monuments (facilities of sacral and profane architecture, facilities of the traditional local architecture, cemeteries and tombstones, public monuments and memorials)
- 7 sights.

Immovable cultural assets of special importance to the Republic:

- 1 archeological site
- 11 cultural monuments.

Immovable cultural assets of major importance to the Republic:
- 3 physical and historical sites
- 2 sights
- 46 cultural monuments.

Up to the present days, there have been registered 1903 assets given a landmark status in the territory of the City of Belgrade:
- Physical sites
- Archeological sites
- Sights
- Cemeteries and tombstones
- Buildings of urban architecture
- Facilities of the traditional local architecture
- Facilities of sacral architecture
- Facilities related to sights or prominent persons
- Public monuments and memorials.

Within its complement, the Institute has the building trade staff, which perform specialized construction and specialists trade works on the protection and revitalization of monument facilities and sites. The Documentation Office of the Institute keeps the Register of Cultural Assets, sorts the extensive documentation and technical materials. An integral part of the documentation also includes the library of plans and the photograph library with the collection of newspapers and periodicals. The experts of the Institute, for the purpose of presentation of their activities, organize exhibitions, lectures, and other forms of familiarization of the public with the significance of the cultural and historical heritage of this area.

The activities on the protection of the cultural assets within the Institute are performed by the associates whose professional qualifications are specified by the Law on Cultural Assets, as follows: historians of arts, architects, archeologists, ethnologist, lawyer, draftsmen, specialized construction workers, and by other administrative and technical services.
